Is It Possible To Catch (computer science) On Fire Due To Spontaneous Combustion
By Aydan Corkern
We always figure that if we safeguard our homes and do our best to be careful we will not likely have a fire to burn us up. We can go to great lengths to install smoke detectors and security systems that will alert us if there is smoke or flames anywhere in the house day or night. We can keep fire extinguishers on hand and use special care when we use our kitchens and in the way we heat our homes. What if you are still not safe from burning up even after you have taken all of these necessary precautions?
It seems that could be the case when it comes to a strange scientific mystery called human combustion. It is a rare phenomenon and is believed by some to have taken place with certain individuals. One minute they are lying in their beds or sitting in a chair and suddenly they simply explode and burst into flames. The flames are said to be so intense that it can char a human body in a half an hour or less.
There have been many mysterious cases of this type of human burning reported since the 1700’s. People have been found to have been burned to the point that their torso had nothing but ashes left, but sometimes there were small or large fragments of their lower or upper extremities that remained. In some cases they had portions of their skulls to remain. When these bodies were discovered, it was puzzling as to how the fire started and why the body and whatever apparatus it was resting on, a bed or chair, was burned so severely and not much else in the room affected.
The cases that prompted the internal combustion theory have had several possible causes although none of them have been entirely proven to be the specific cause. Some think that there had to be an external cause such as an abundance of secreted body fat on the outside of the body or clothes that was ignited by one thing or another. Another theory is that static electricity could perhaps cause the sudden burst into flames. Some explanations thought by some are that there are certain elements in the body such as oxygen, hydrogen, or perhaps potassium that somehow intermingle and cause this bizarre occurrence.
There have even been some cases where people have begun burning and survived. While some offer a plausible explanation as to the cause, some believe these really were examples of spontaneous combustion that did not end in fatality. We might not have ever considered just sitting around and blowing up for no reason a possibility, but evidently there could be some cause for concern.

Computer Simulation of the Human Population
By Robert Webb
The power of computers is advancing at a rapid pace. Eventually, will we have the power to begin computer simulations of whole human populations? What would this mean economically if we were able to run these types of simulations? Could simulations of economic and political policies first be run on a computer before being enacted in the real world? Would this result in an optimization of economic activity and an ever greater increase in gdp per capita? How does one successfully model human behavior to a degree that is both accurate yet computationally efficient?
The human brain is one of the most complex organs known to man. To successfully model human populations it is vital that the computer models can successfully account for how an individuals brain would respond in specific situations in a sensory environment. Perhaps in the future, computer simulations that model entire human brains will allow even more realistic virtual simulations. However, this would require too much computational power that is not currently available. The Pentagon currently wants to “realistically replicate human behavior and frailties” to improve cyberwarfare tactics. The philosopher Nick Bostrom has argued that we may already be living in a computer simulation being run by an advanced civilization. This seems quite far fetched and I find it unlikely that we are in a simulation being run by other beings. However the increasing in computing power available to us may mean that we will soon be able to run these advanced computer simulations ourselves.
I think it could potentially be enormously beneficial to society to accurately model human populations. I would suggest that reliably simulating this aspect of general intelligence (along with possibly several other psychological variables that are too complex to go into in this post) might result in a reasonably accurate simulation. Now the simulation would currently be constrained by computational capacity. It could however allow a future society to run multiple simulations with various economic policies to find the one which lead to the best outcome for every person. A simulation is only as good as it reliably models human behavior. So they might have to run multiple simulations with different variables until a model that worked reasonably well was chosen.
A computer simulation would have the same problems that economics is plagued with currently. How do you measure economic success? Some people place more value on gdp per capita, while others might place more value on things like universal healthcare. I think it would be difficult for people to agree on what was the best measure of success for a population. There is also the issue of control. A person who successfully creates a computer simulation that can reasonably model human populations might have a considerable advantage economically over other people that did not have the model.

Our Search For Water On Mars Has Turned Snowy
By Aydan Corkern
For centuries it has been wondered by man whether or not there was life on the Martian planet or not. Now that we have actually been able to send a rover there to explore the surface of this intriguing planet, we believe now that at least there is no visible life there. The testing done by the rover and the technical gadgets it is equipped has been taking soil and rock samples to see if there might be some sort of small lifeform or water.
One of the main things scientists wanted to know for sure other than are there any life forms on Mars is whether or not there is any water present just below the surface of the planet anywhere. Scientists firmly believe that water once flowed on this planet, but dried up on the surface long ago. In the water that is though to be beneath the ground is where scientists were hopeful that they might still find some form of life.
So far there has been no discovery of anything living. At least if there has been anything found alive the rest of us have not been told about it. One of the recent discoveries that have been made is when the rover detected snowfall in the Martian atmosphere. This is a welcome finding since it is associated with water. The snowfall and ice particles evidently were not making it to the ground surface, but it is intriguing for scientists none the less.
They have said they will continue to watch for more of the snow falling on the North Polar cap for as long as the rover is still working. Soon the sun will be setting for Mars and will not return until sometime in April. This means that the solar powered rover will stop working for good. The rover has already lasted longer than was expected and this is a good thing else the snowfall might not have been detected had the rover already shut down as scientists though it should have.
What all of this water on Mars business really has to do with all of us is still in question. It could mean more to our future generations and then again it could all amount to nothing except gaining knowledge about a far away place that none of us would ever have the opportunity to do to and would we want to even if we could?
